I learned about Yerba Mate while teaching in Argentina for six years. At the time I was a confirmed coffee drinker and didn’t feel the need for any more caffeine or “mateine”, as it is called. But I did enjoy the occasional sip through the unusual metal tea strainer straw called a bombilla, and decided I loved it hot and strong, without any milk or sugar.
Spin forward ten years, and I found myself with some health problems that necessitated quitting coffee. Coffee is probably one of the more difficult substances to quit cold turkey and I realized I needed to quickly find another source of caffeine if I were to be a social creature.
At the time my daughter was dating an Argentine and he provided me with a mate gourd and bombilla. He told me where to purchase Yerba Mate and I was off and running. My coffee maker became my hot water heater and I can be seen most days with my thermos and my mate gourd—loving my yerba mate.
Mate was used by the Guachos, Argentine cowboys who lived on the Pampas, killing small game, or one of their herds for meat, carrying flour to make bread over an open fire, and eating wild onions. Not surprisingly, they soon discovered a need for greens. They discovered that Mate kept their digestive systems running like clockwork—another wonderful benefit of Mate.
After reading of the health benefits of Yerba Mate, I remembered those beautiful Argentine women, svelte and healthy with long, glorious hair—the benefit of the B vitamins and iron. As an appetite depressant, Mate is a natural, non-chemical way to maintain your weight as you age. Now at 62 my hair is thicker and healthier than it has been since my youth and I have been able to maintain my weight for the past 15 years.
I highly recommend switching to Yerba Mate!
